WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL
August, 2012
Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year. I am planning and anticipating a year filled with challenge, learning, and excitement in our math class. The following outlines information concerning our classroom policies and rules. Please read the information, sign, and return at your earliest convenience.
Classwork and Homework Policy
The teacher will provide students with their weekly assignments on the board. Students are responsible to make sure they copy the assignments and turn them in on time. It is suggested that every student have at least one phone number from another student in the class. Not only is this helpful for finding out the assignments, but also for helping one another. All assignments must be done in pencil and must include the accepted heading:
Top right side in the white margin
Classwork Assignments will be issued and done in the classroom everyday to make sure the students have understood the lesson. Students are strongly encouraged to ask questions, especially when they don’t understand the material. If after the question has been answered and explained by the teacher and the student continues to not understand, it is the student responsibility to make time to see the teacher to clarify any confusion.
Homework Assignments will be assigned if class work is not finished or if the students are working on assignments that require work outside of the classroom.
Missed Work/Make-Up Work Assignment Policy
Excused absences will allow for extended deadlines. Make-up work will be due within 2 days after returning to class. It is encouraged for students to keep up to date with class material. If there is a test missed, students need to make up the test the next day. It is the student responsibility to remember to make up the work.
Evaluation Procedure
Student performance will be assessed in journal, classwork assignments, projects, homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. The teacher will give a test at the end of every chapter. A review will be conducted the day before the test. Students are responsible to take notes and study for the exam. Student’s classwork/homework will be checked based on effort and completion. However, quizzes may be given once a week to make sure students are doing and understanding their homework. It is very important for students to complete and turn in assignments on time. At the end of every nine weeks the teacher will add all assignments collected and students will receive a letter grade based on the completed assignments turned in.
Grading Scale
100 – 90 A
89 – 80 B
79 – 70 C
69 – 60 D
59 F
Progress reports are issued at the end of the fourth week every nine-week term. Report cards are sent with the students a week after the end of every nine-week term. If a student receives a letter grade of C, D or F, I will request conferences on the comment section of the report card. This may be due to incomplete assignments, failure of tests, or misbehavior. Please follow-up to discuss any of these issues to prevent student from falling behind.
How can you keep track of a student’s performance in Math class?
· Check to make sure their journal writing and their homework are done every day.
· Encourage student to ask questions in class.
· Check their academic progress online with the electronic gradebook.
Classroom Rules
Everyone has the right to be treated with respect and the responsibility to learn. In order for these to happen, the following rules must be enforced in the classroom.
Consequences for Breaking Rules
No activity that interferes with the learning process will be tolerated. If a student does not follow the above rules, a detention warning will be given. If the student continues to break the rules, a detention will be issued. If the student continues to misbehave, and/or not turn in assignments, there will be a conference between student, parents, teacher and administrator.
It is very important for students to attend class, and be on time. Students who are absent excessively from the instructional program will fall behind in academic achievement. After three tardies to class, students will receive a detention.
I believe that everyone can be successful if they are provided with support in a caring and safe environment. If students feel safe, then they will take risks that lead to learning gains.
I would like to see an academically strong and enjoyable year for all students. I expect them to become productive and self-directed. But only these goals can be achieved through student, parent, and teacher involvement. You can reach me by calling the school at (305) 995-3800 and leaving a message. I will return your call as soon as possible.
Again, welcome to the classroom. Here's to a great year!
Sincerely yours,
Ms. Charles
